This training course is not a substitute for following the detailed recommendations contained in the guide

However, this course is designed to provide an overview of the information and principles in the guide to assist in understanding how to use the guide properly.

The overview to the load restraint guide provides a 10-step plan for you to follow in restraining your load.

In summary form the steps are:

  1. Understand Your load.
  2. Choose a suitable Vehicle for your load type and size.
  3. Use a restraint system that is suitable for your load.
  4. Position your load to maintain vehicle stability, steering and Braking.
  5. Check your vehicles structures and restraint equipment are in good working condition and strong enough to restrain your load.
  6. Make sure your load is stabilised.
  7. Make sure you understand and use safe work practices when loading and unloading a vehicle.
  8. Make sure you have enough restraints to keep you and others safe.
  9. Drive according to the load and driving conditions
  10. Check your load and its restraints regularly during your journey.

Modules 2 through 4 of this course will provide background information and techniques explaining some of the technical language and concepts. This includes how to:

  • Understand your load,
  • Understand your vehicle
  • Understand common types of Load Restraint equipment.
  • Calculate the number of restraints required to meet the performance criteria for your load.
  • In module 5 we will return to the checklist and discuss how to apply what you have learned in the earlier modules to implementing the checklist.
