Australia’s National Road Safety Strategy

Australian governments at all levels have been pursuing strategies aimed at reducing road trauma for many decades.

The key assumption underpinning these strategies is that most road trauma is preventable

Over the decades Australia has been very successful at reducing road trauma

But there is still more to do.

What are the strategies that have produced these changes?

The national office of road safety has adopted a safe systems approach to trying to reduce the road toll.

This approach recognises that there is no simple solution to making the roads safe and that we need to focus on the system as a whole.

The strategy focusses on improving the safety of the road infrastructure, encouraging safer speeds, safer behavior from people and safer vehicles.
