5.4 Summary/recap

In this module we explained the difference between general access and restricted access vehicles.

We described the characteristics that define general access vehicles and explained that they may travel anywhere in the road system except where road signage prohibits them from going (e.g. under low bridges)

We described the various types of restricted access vehicles and provided examples of each type.

We explained that restricted access vehicles need an authorisation to use the road system and that this authorisation may take two forms:

• A notice that describes a class of vehicles and specifies the routes those vehicles may travel on and the conditions they must follow.
• A permit that specifies the vehicles that are covered by the permit as well as the routes those vehicles may travel on and the conditions they must follow.

We explained that notices are published in the Government Gazette and that operators must apply for a permit.

Finally, we described the Performance Based Standards scheme and explained how the PBS scheme allows innovative vehicle designs to access the road system. We provided an overview of the benefits of PBS vehicles and the outlined the process for getting approval for a PBS vehicle.
